Habitat: Coarse sand and gravel bottomed riffles with moderate to fast current. Also, introduced populations found in large dam lakes and rivers disconnected by estuary dams with sea. Scraper feeding group: Feeds on algea. Amphidromous species: Adult fish spawn in lower reach of river in late summer(northern populations) to early winter(Jeju Island populations). Young fish usually stay over winter in the sea and swim up to upper or middle reach of river in late spring.

Range: Native to Northeast Asia:  North Korea, South Korea, Japan,  eastern China, Taiwan.

Remarks: One of the most popular food fish and game fish in South Korea. Fairly common in South Korea and Japan. In China, this species is on the list of endangered animals.
